The course "Introduction to computerized knitting" will introduce students to the basics of knitting technology. Knitting is a known handicraft, but industrial knitting has gained momentum in recent years as a means of production in many fields, from clothing and footwear to medical products, architectural buildings and even satellites. Industrial knitting is based on mathematical principles that allow the creation of detailed two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional intricate structures, all while combining different materials and allowing control over the properties of different areas of the object.

The ability to use digital tools for the design and fabrication of knitted structures creates many opportunities for research in diverse fields; From knitting small objects with structural complexity to knitting large-scale architectural structures. Students taking this course will learn the basics of knitting, get familiar with different knitting technique such as jacquard, plating and intarsia, and will incorporate an algorithm-based design to plan the knits. In addition, they will be exposed to recent academic studies dealing with industrial knitting. At the end of the course, the students will submit a knitted group project.
